#Janathon day 30, penultimate day

Wow this month has flown, I can't believe that Janathon is almost over for another year.
Today I have been on a first aid at workcourse . I really enjoyed it, refreshed some knowledge and learnt some new stuff too.
Exercise wise, I have walked the dog and walked to school, I've also been to running club for training, hill repeats on Landrover Hill. I need to work on my hills, I'm just not strong enough on the way up. Ok on the way down though. When I got home I did 2x25 sit ups and 3 x 12 pressups.

#Janathon day 29, swim day

Wednesday is swim day and I was dreading it after Monday's swim. My sore shoulder did feel a little better. Breast stroke irritated it more than crawl, and as the pool was busy I didn't do drills, I just found a nice pace and swam 104 lengths, I had decided to go for 100 in an hour, but I managed 104 in 56:26 so I am happy with that, plus my shoulder is no more sore than it was when I went in.

#Janathon day 28, where does the time go?

10:30 pm and that's me just sitting down after a long day. I got up at 5:45 this morning, had breakfast, did some stretches and walked the dog before making my packed lunch and walking to work for 8:15 am.
A reasonably steady day at work, but not a moment wasted, then walk home at 4:00 pm, walk the fog, get ready for Junior running club. Ran to club because I had set off and forgot ton my inhaler, so came home for it, the I had to run to get there in time.
Meet and retreat with the juniors, we ran to and from the location where the juniors paired off, one running one direction, the other running the opposite, until they met, where they tagged, turned and ran back until they met again, repeat, I ran too as we had an odd number of youngsters.
Then it was adult club, so after stretching the juniors, I got ready to lead an adult group, the pace wax quick and the group was large, so we split into 2 groups. My group split periodically until only 3 of us remaind to complete 6.8 miles., then after sorting some stuff at club, I came home and got something to eat and drink whilst I sorted some stuff for work, and finally I got my bath and have just finished my list of tasks for today, just in time to go to bed,
Night all, 3 days to go stay strong

#Janathon day 25, hills, Hills and more hills

Today is brick day, 30 miles on the bike followed by 30 minutes of running. I went with hubby and we picked a hilly route, all good practise for Wales. The weather was cold and clear, but as we set off on the last 10 miles, the wind picked up, and most of the way it was a head wind.
The wind made the run really tough, at times it was like running on the spot. But I pushed onwards and covered 5 km so reasonably happy. Tomorrow is a long run day, hope the weather is better.

#Janathon day 27. BLF newsletter

I've had a request from the British Lung Foundation to write a few lines about my 2013 challenge.
This is what I have written

My dad Eddie had emphysema for many years before he died. He would go for morning walks to keep himself going, when I finally gave up smoking and started running instead, we would often pass each other whilst out for our daily exercise. Unfortunately though, in April 2008 Dad's heart gave out. I won a club place at The London Marathon 2011. I thought this an ideal chance to raise some money in his memory, and so it started. The London Marathon in 2011 was followed by and Ripon Black Sheep triathlon and Round Ripon Ultra . In 2012 I completed 3 marathons, an ultra marathon and an Iron Distance triathlon. But 2013 was the toughest year ever,
13 marathons, 1 sprint, 1 Olympic, 1 middle and 1 long distance triathlons, all part of my aim to run 2013 miles in one year, A sprained ankle in January threatened to put paid to my plans, but this was for Dad, so 4 days rest and I was going again. The marathon a month left me tired and as the months past and the triathlons were added to the workload, my mileage slipped, by the end of September I really doubted it was possible to complete the challenge, I would have to run an average of 49 miles a week for the rest of the year. In October I ran only 4 days a week, but some days twice a day, and the mileage started to go up as did my confidence. By December I was back on track and planned a big finish on New Year's Eve.
At 10 am on 31/12/13 I met with friends and family and a few canine running partners At St Mary's church, Studley Deer Park near Ripon, to run the 1 mile (my 2013th) down the drive. I was very pleased to complete the tough challenge that I had set myself. My friends and family gave been an amazing support the whole year, and the fundraising target was exceeded, which was the whole purpose of the challenge.
I have now sent in the request for Dad's memorial tree and am so proud of myself. But the reality is, that my 2013 challenge of running 2013 miles including a marathon a month and Outlaw and Vitruvian triathlons was completely a team effort.
Today was swim night, 2k + of skills and drills,

#Janathon day 26 Challenging the weather

What a day! Windy, cold and driving rain, jut the day for a long run. Unfortunately I needed to do my second training run for London marathon, so weather had to be ignored.
It wasn't too bad when I first set out, but within 30 mins the rain started to fall and the howling wind forced it horizontal at times.
I had picked a hilly route and the higher I was, the colder it felt and the rain became sleety. Oddly enough I didn't see many people, they probably had more sense than me. The run was very unpleasant, but very satisfying at the same time. Last weeks run had been a struggle, it was on flatter ground but my legs weren't playing. This week my legs were playing, what a difference, shame I was soaked to the skin and freezing cold. Had the weather been better Zi would have added a mile or two more! but I was more than ready to go home once I had reached my planned 16 miles.
I have only need as cold wet and uncomfortable when running once before. Today's weather was similar to the 2012 Manchester Marathon and that was the end of April, so you never know London may be like it on 13 th April. So all good practise.
Warm and dry now though.

#Janathon day 24, skiving doesn't make an Ironman

A dog walk this morning on hard frosty ground rather than the sloppy mud of late. Then a walk to work, and back home.
Home made pizza and trifle Made me lose any will I may have had to do the dreaded yoga. Don't know why, but I don't like yoga or Pilates, I think it comes from my dislike fir indoor training.
Tick Tock, the clock never stops.
Sitting procrastinating would not get the necessary evil conquered so I got my mat and IPad and got on with it. I decided to do a plank set to get me going, 1 min front, 1 min left side and 1 min right side.
My left shoulder/arm has been sore a while and the left side plank was a toughy.
Then 30 mins pocket yoga, and my runtastic six pack app, 40 l side leg lifts each side, 32 sit ups and 32 leg lifts. I finished the session with my runtastic squats app 40-18-16-28
I feel a bit better now that it's done, so  Silent Witness and Old Rosie cider to round off the day.

#Janathon day 23, training, training training

I was training the juniors tonight, a hill session with 4x2 min reps, the kids were great, they worked hard and loved it, what more can you ask.
I held back as I was going to the adult training session straight after.
Adult training was a sprint session, fast and furious, sometimes I did well, other times I struggled, it was to do with the light, we were running on an oval shaped street and from some angles it was dark and I was nervous of tripping. I didn't thank goodness.
When I got home it was time for the dreaded sit ups and press ups., 2x30 sit ups and 2x25 pressups.

Wednesday 22 January 2014

#Janathon day 22, swim test day

Monthly swim test. The pool was busy again, what a nightmare, I only have 2 sessions I can attend but this Wednesday one always seems to be packed, with specially unaware kids and adults trying to train.
It was chaos.
I couldn't keep track of my lengths, I had to slow or stop to avoid others. But I got it done, even if my first 450 yd was actually 650. Don't know how I managed to miscount that badly.

Tuesday 21 January 2014

#Janathon day 21

Running club day today, I ran 3 miles with my junior group, then I ran with my adult group, one runner needed to go back and we have a no one goes back alone policy, so I volunteered to accompany them back. I didn't mind because I had already run with the youngsters.

#Janathon day 20 New Job, New challenges

Today I started my new job as TA support for a visually impaired student. I spent the day learning to use the Braille machines and computer programs. So along with everything else Ineed to do this yearI need to learn Braille.
After work I went for my wk12 Monday swim, always challenging, but this week it was quieter in the pool which made it easier to complete my session. 2550 yds of drills completed.

Sunday 19 January 2014

#Janathon day 19, first #VMLM2014 trg run

I ran miles and miles in 2013, but towards the end of the year I didn't go over 10 miles of continuous road running, the marathons were off road hilly affairs, very different. I have had a couple of weeks with only 6 miles a week of running. This week I got back to running and have impressed myself with the better pace that I have been running so I did think that I'd manage 15 miles today. No! Try as I might I could not get a decent pace and struggled from 7-10 miles, then even though the pace did not increase, I felt better, but had had enough by 13.7 miles.
Hopefully I'll do better and make 15 miles next week.

Saturday 18 January 2014

#Janathon day 18 wet and foggy

Today was a bike/run brick day. If I wasn't training for Ironman Wales, I'd have stopped in bed. Instead Billy Martin and I headed for Masham on the road bikes, the fog got thicker and the boys disappeared into it. They kept waiting, I felt I was letting them down but just couldn't go any quicker.
When we got back  25 miles later, We ran seperately, I did transition quickest but it wasn't long before Billy overtook me running comfortably. It was not a comfortable run, I was wet and cold and couldn't feel my feet until I had to stop for a road, then as feeling returned to my feet I felt much more comfortable running but only had a mile to go, 3 miles run. In under 30 mins, so happy with that

Friday 17 January 2014

#Janathon day 17 an emotional day

Rest day, Aagghh! Sit ups and press ups to start the day, a tough day.
Today was the last day at my current job. Fresh start Monday. The hardest part was telling the class where I have been a TA for the last 4 months. I felt pretty rubbish when 20 year 5 children's faces dropped with the realisation of what I had said. Later a year 4 child brought me a picture he'd made.I maintained my composure. Even when the student I look after brought me a huge bunch of flowers.
The afternoon assembly was the end of me though, the reaction of the rest of the school brought all the emotions out. I'm such a softy. More flowers ANC I could barely speak my thanks.
So that's it, another door closes and on Monday I start work in secondary school as a TA to a visually impaired child. A whole new challenge.
I Finished today with half an hour's Pilates.

Thursday 16 January 2014

#Janathon day 16, club training

Running club was intervals tonight, 3 x 10 min efforts, we ran to the location where we were to run, walking up on route, we ran 5 mins out/up and 5 mins back/down. When I set off I set off near the back, I spotted my friend and worked hard to catch up, I couldn't overtake though, we ran together for the rest of the session, we pushed each other and got further up the road each effort.
Really worked hard tonight.
Then I went to a Lions meeting. Gonna be tired tomorrow for my last day at work. Dreading telling the kids that I'm going.

Wednesday 15 January 2014

#Janathon day 15

Wednesday is swim day. Had tea, read a FB message about a Garmin I am selling and went to get it. Couldn't find it, I was sure I knew where I'd put it, could visualise myself putting it there. But it wasn't. I tipped out drawers and got more stressed. I needed to go, swimming was at 6. You need to get there on time to get decent space. No lanes this session. I was a couple of mins late and the pool was manic, it was heaving. I put my training equipment at the side and got in. It took a few mins to find a break to set off. I managed to do 4 x25 yd then had to wait again, managed another 4 and wait. There was no point trying to complete my plan so I just swam as I could, I had a kid jump over me, I was swimming with my head up a lot to try and avoid the blokes coming the other direction. It was a nightmare, I got out and on the way home spoke to staff about the situation and the possibility of putting a lane in when the pool was so hectic. I was told that management won't allow it and that the lane that was in all afternoon was unused. "That's probably because most people are at work in the afternoon". I explained that a lane could have had up to 6 of us in it and been safer for us training and the recreational swimmers. I was told that they would ask again.
So that's it, a training fail but at least I did some swimming 1400 yds in the end.

Tuesday 14 January 2014

#Janathon day 14 back running

I was glad to get back to running today after 2 weeks of resting. I first ran as a Junior coach and was relieved to find it relatively easy and well paced, then I ran wi th my usual group of adults and was pleased to be near the front of the group until 5 1/2 miles wheI started to fade, bug I pushed on.
Happy with my performance tonight.

Monday 13 January 2014

#Janathon day 13 IM trg week 11

So it's 11 weeks since I started this training plan which will prepare me off Outlaw and Ironman Wales.
The swimming is tough, I don't really like swimming in the pool, it takes too much concentration and I always loose count of lengths. But I try hard and my swimming is improving Im sure. Tonight I swam a mile and a half of drills. I now have dead arms, bug I feel good.

Sunday 12 January 2014

#Janathon day 12, playing with the boys again

A 3 hour bike ride today with Billy and Martin. Was harder to keep up with them today, managed ok for 25 miles, the hilliest section, then as the roads leveled out and the boy's cadence increased and they pulled away, Periodically they would slow ans I'd catch up, then around 30 miles, I got caught at traffic lights as they disappeared into the distance. I was trying to catch up when a car forced me into a pothole, with the jar came a pain in my left side. I think I've pulled a muscle around my rib area. This made it harder to ride hard, I just got my head down and found a nice rythem to force my way through the head wind to where the boys were waiting.
Well rested they soon pulled away again, I fought to catch up and was closing the gap when I decided to slow to chat with a runner, she was wearing a Leeds half marathon t shirt. " what are you training for?" I asked, " A half marathon in two weeks" she replied. "Oh! Brass Monkey?"  said I. " No, a half marathon in Marrakesh" said she. I wished her well and worked hard at closing the gap with the boys again. I caught them at Skelton, but could not keep it up and let them get away. They waited once more and then we were home, 42 miles in 3:07:40 with 1690 ft of elevation.
Biking with the boys is tough, but it's also a good way to improve, so I hope to go out with them at least once a week.

Saturday 11 January 2014

#Janathon day 11 first brick session of the year

We had a reasonably early start to walk the dog then, Billy and I went to Martin's with our trainers in a bag. It was a cold bright morning which makes a change from recent says.
It's a while since I've ridden with the boys, lately they've gone off together on the road bikes and I went of and did my own thing on the mountain bike. But I've been doing hills to improve my strength. As usual I was soon trailing at the back, bug what surprised me was that I gained on them on inclines. They got away again on downhills, I'm still really wimpy on descents. We picked a hilly route so there was plenty of opportunities to catch up, I worked hard and did just that.
When we got back to Martin's we stripped down to running gear, the boys left me standing. I had cold feet and new shoes, It felt like I was wading through mud, but I kept chasing and ran a 9:06 min pace for 2.3 miles, that's good for me, even more so after an 18 mile hilly bike ride.
Not bad for first brick session.

Friday 10 January 2014

#Janathon day 10 active rest day

So Friday is here, it's not just the end of my working week it's also rest day, that doesn't mean doing nothing, IM trg plan says yoga or Pilates. Today I did 30 mins of yoga. Then some roller work. Also I have walked the dog and biked gently to and from work, but importantly my heart rate has remained below 110.

Thursday 9 January 2014

#Janathon day 9 Roll on spring

Ironman training plan says bike and core today. I haven't been to running club as I think I need another week, see how I feel next Tuesday.
I woke up this morning and my arms were killing me, serious DOMS made planking difficult, still managed a 1 min front plank but only 30 sec each side. I then did my Runtastic abs training.
Then usual dog walking and cycling to and from work.
The dark nights and recent puncture made me reluctant to go out in the dark so it was the dreaded rollers. I wore my Outlaw t shirt and put IMWales on YouTube. I think Ai did a bit better than last week! but it's so hard keeping balanced. A great workout I agree but I thought the 30 mins would never end.
Couldn't get anywhere near 90 cadence. Did manage some gear changing though.
Glad it wax over, then I did 2x25 sit-ups and 2x18 press ups. Rest day tomorrow .
Training will be much better I'm sure in the spring.

Wednesday 8 January 2014

#Janathon day 8 feeling aggrieved

Well I like to think that I'm a happy go lucky positive person, and that's how I was feeling when I got up, tired but happy. Then something happened. I was happily walking Jed and I came to the zebra crossing, I stopped, I looked both ways, a car on my right stopped so I walked onto the crossing, there was a big car approaching on my left as I got in front of it, it kept coming, then he slammed the brakes on. I was shocked, my heart was trying to escape from my mouth. I looked over the bonnet at the driver and he glared at me, I signaled to the zebra beneath my feet and completed my journey across the road. I was angry and upset. I'd gad a right fright. Why on earth do some people drive like that, it seemed to be more and more common. Just last week, as I was about to step onto the same crossing a car came speeding around the corner and across the crossing.
I do feel lucky though, because I survived both incidents, they could gave been very different. That wasn't the end of it though. My cycle commute to and from work is short, 1.5 miles there and 2.5 home. I wear my fluorescent jacket and when it's dark I have lights, I don't jump lights and follow the same road rules ax cars, but regularly car drivers put my life at risk just so they could save a few seconds. On the way home today, as I approached a roundabout, one of those white painted ones, I got in the right lane and was cycling around the roundabout, when suddenly the car behind me overtook me by driving over the roundabout, drove 10 yds and pulled into his drive. WHY?
GGGRrrr!
Anyhow grumbles over, I've walked and Cycled and survived both. I also went swimming. I was dreading it, there is no land in on the Wed session and it's only 1 hr session, so I need to be in right on 6. I wax tonight and got my favourite spot along the wall and warmed up the pool got busy quick and soon it was quite difficult at times. I lost count of my laps so did a few more than necessary. 2250 yds and reasonably quick, whole session plus a bit completed. So I'm happy about that.

Tuesday 7 January 2014

#Janathon day 7 First run of the year

4.12 miles run today, first run of 2014. I have not run for a week, the longest period since Nov 2012. Didn't feel rested as Id hoped.
The actual run felt faster than it was so I was a little disappointed when I looked at my watch. Did keep my heart rate nicely in zone 3 though. I will not run again for another week then it's into London Marathon training.

Monday 6 January 2014

#Janathon day 6 still not running

Still not run this year but I'm shattered. Cycling and swimming are not on hold. Today is swim day and a new training plan. Iam employing a coach for Ironman training this year and today was the stare of week 10 training. The swim session was massive. The longest swim I've done in months and the hardest session I have ever done, about 1.7 milesof drills., 100 kicking, 600 front crawl and that was just the warm up, then 4x100yd, 3x75yd, 2 x 50 yd 2x 25 yd. 1 x25 to get back to start then 200 yd open finger broken into 50 s and alternated with front crawl, then 200 yd head tap broken into 50s and alternated with front crawl. Then was 3x150 yd and at last cool down 100 breast stroke, 100 front crawl and 50 of backstroke.
This training is getting tough and there's 7 months to go to Outlaw, and 9 to IMWales.

Sunday 5 January 2014

#Janathon day 5 long bike

Longest bike ride in a while for me, I went on the mountain bike, yesterday's puncture repair held, but I spent  the whole ride worrying about more punctures as the farmers have been hedge cutting.
I picked a hilly route because Ironman Wales is not flat. It was not easy but I got a good rythem and remained seeted on the inclines, bug I'm not saddle fit, by 25 miles I kept having to stand up to ease my back and bum. Still, 35 miles and 2200ft total ascent in just over 3 hours.
Good training but now I'm shattered, did get rid of over 2000 calories though

Saturday 4 January 2014

#Janathon day 4 bike fail

Today was run day, but as I am still resting from my 2013 running mikes in 2013, I decided a gentle cycle to watch the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at LightWater Valley. I arrived at Lightwatervalley and noticed an odd noise, I looked down and a stick was plinking as it passed my front forks. It was well and truly attached to my tyre by a thorn. When removed the plinking was replaced by a gentle sssss.
My mountain bike repair kit comprises of 2 tyre levers, 2 co2 cartridges and a pack of self adhesive patches. First time I've sorted a puncture with such high tech kit.
It was a front wheel puncture, but I didn't remove the wheel, I let out the air and took out the tube, I couldn't find the hole, How do I just put a bit of air in with these gas cartridges? I fitted a cartridge to its adapter and pushed it onto the valve, nothing, no hiss, no inflation. My first reaction was " how long will it take to walk the 3.5 miles home pushing the bike?" I loosened the canister from the adapter and SSSSS! Quick tighten it back up. Put it back on the valve, loosen the cartridge, PfFff! The tube inflated. I bent down and passed the inflated tube past my face, nothing, no escaping air. Inflate more, and there if was, a tiny breath against my lip, I stuck my finger over the escaping air. Where do you not want a puncture, on a join. And where was my cold finger stuck right now? On the join. I replaced my finger with a patch and pressed for dear life.
After a few minutes I released my grip and returned the tube to the wheel, and re attached the gas cartridge to the tube, it inflated a bit but ran out of gas. I changed cartridges and as I loosened the cartridge to release the fax I still had my fingers on the adapter and froze my already cold fingers to it. I snatched them away and put my gloves on.
Tyre inflated, cold and wet I decided to return home. I was paranoid about the repair not holding, but it did.
So that's it for today 2 dog walks and 7.7 miles on the bike.

Friday 3 January 2014

#Janathon day 3

There are 3 of us training together for Outlaw and Ironmaan Wales. This morning we headed for Catterick to swim in the 25 m pool. When we got there it was a different timetable and the session had finished so we went to Richmond instead. Swimming went well even though I was distracted by the fact that the Yorkshire marathon early entries opened at 9am and I was in the pool. So after the session, i was on my phone and online entering the race which is not until October.
Also I have entered the Great North Run ballot today. IM starting to miss running already, especially as Billy and Martin were planning a 10 mile run tomorrow. Only 3 more days and I will run with the Juniors for a short run before another week of rest.
Not that I feel rested after tonight's sit up and squat session.
I've also walked the dog twice.

As you can see, I've had a busy year. In the middle I got the race bug and put the challenge in jeopardy, I was exhausted. In October I gave up cycling and swimming and managed to run 242 miles, including my fastest marathon of the year, the Yorkshire marathon 4:24, this was my all time 2 nd fastest ever marathon time.
In November I had to start incorporating cycling and swimming again as part of the training for my 2014 challenge of 2 iron distance triathlons within 50 days.
In March my gorgeous Granddaughter was born and training sometimes goes on hold because I want to spend time with her.
In July it was hubby and I's 25 th wedding anniversary. It was a couple of days before Outlaw so we didn't celebrate at the time. When I finished Outlaw, Billy ( who had already finished) surprised me with a vow renewal.
In July I also left my job at Outwood Academy due to restructure.
In September I started a new Job at a primary School as a TA. I also met the Brownlee brothers at the Brownlee Tri. Lovely young men.
In December I got a T A job at Outwood and so the New year will bring a job change for me.
Finally, on 31 st December I completed my 2013 challenge with a 1 mile run at Studley with friends family and Jed.
Friends ran a mile in other parts of the world too.
I have, with your help raise over £1200 for the British Lung Foundation.
Thank you all for your support during a very busy year.
